The square of sophie's age is 16 less than joanna's age. it is also the case that joanna's age is 8 times that of sophie. how old is joanna?

Let s be Sophie's age. Then joanna is s²+16. Joanna is also 8s, if  Sophie is s. So:
s²+16=8s
s²-8s+16=0
(s-4)²=0
s=4
Sophie is 4; Joanna is 32
